Students at Amsterdam’s Tecler Elementary School explored the process of maple syrup production Monday during a visit from the Mobile Maple Experience.
The interactive program gave students an opportunity to learn about the history of maple syrup, the different varieties of syrup and how maple sap is collected and transformed into syrup. Students also learned about the equipment and techniques used throughout the production process.
During the presentation, students were also able to make a connection to their own school meals, learning that maple syrup products like the ones featured during the experience are served in the Greater Amsterdam School District cafeteria.
The experience included hands-on learning opportunities designed to help students better understand an important part of New York agriculture and local industry.
At the end of the presentation, students participated in a maple tasting, where they sampled different maple products while applying what they learned during the program.
“It was a great experience for our students,” Tecler Elementary Principal John Miller said. “The Mobile Maple Experience gave them an engaging way to learn about agriculture and the maple syrup process while also allowing them to try different maple products firsthand.”
