AMSTERDAM, N.Y. — Lynch Middle School students recently took part in a hands-on learning experience that connected agriculture, local food systems and the school cafeteria.
Students helped shuck corn that will be prepared for distribution to the school cafeteria as part of the district’s Farm to School efforts. The activity provided students with a practical opportunity to learn more about how food makes its way from local farms to school meals.
Through the experience, students gained a greater understanding of agricultural practices and the role local farmers play in providing food for their community. Preparing the corn also allowed students to contribute directly to the process of getting locally grown food ready for school meals.
The activity supported the Farm to School program while giving students a firsthand look at the connection between local agriculture and the food they eat at school.
