Board of Education

AMSTERDAM, N.Y. — The Greater Amsterdam School District is recognizing its Board of Education members during School Board Recognition Week, Oct. 12-16, 2026, in appreciation of their dedication, leadership and commitment to public education.

Sponsored by the New York State School Boards Association (NYSSBA), School Board Recognition Week highlights the important role school board members play in supporting students, staff and communities across New York state.

The GASD Board of Education consists of seven elected members and one ex officio student member who help guide the district's educational priorities and long-term direction. Board members volunteer their time to serve the school community, with responsibilities that include establishing district policies, developing annual budgets for voter approval, reviewing educational programs and making decisions that support student success.

The district recognizes the following Board of Education members for their service:

  • Rev. Kent A. McHeard, President

  • Wendy Swezey, Vice President

  • Dennis P. Boice Jr.

  • Dr. Nellie A. Bush

  • JoMarie DiTata

  • Juan Montalvo

  • Mike Porter

  • Abby Grant, Ex Officio Student Board Member

Through their leadership and commitment, board members work to ensure the district continues providing educational opportunities that prepare students for success while representing the interests of the Amsterdam community. The inclusion of a student representative also provides an opportunity for student perspectives to be heard in district discussions.

School Board Recognition Week provides an opportunity to raise awareness of the responsibilities board members carry throughout the year and the impact their decisions have on the district.

The Greater Amsterdam School District extends its appreciation to all Board of Education members for their continued service, dedication and commitment to the students, staff and families of GASD.
